Pink Whistle Campaign

Maryland Student Officials Association (MSOA) donated to Komen Maryland (the Maryland affiliate of the National Susan G. Komen Foundation) in the amount of $500 as a result of their Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Whistle Campaign. Thanks to MSOA members, family, and friends the club was able to sell whistles and acquire generous donations doubling their initial goal of $250.

Komen Maryland will allocate 75% of the donation to research and development within the state of Maryland. Part of the donation will be used for various programs to help people affected by breast cancer including grants for individuals who are financially unable to get mammograms, transportation for cancer patients and their families to doctor's appointments, and movable feasts for cancer patients without the strength to prepare a meal after chemotherapy treatments. The other 25% goes to the national headquarters and will be used for research and development.

Thank you to all those that took part in the Pink Whistle Campaign. Much recognition goes out to MSOA and their contribution to the University of Maryland, the surrounding community, and the national fight against breast cancer.

Ballroom: Heating Up the Dance Floor

Ballroom at Maryland (BAM) hosted their Annual DC Dancesport Inferno on November 4-6, 2011 and the competition was fierce! The club had a strong showing and placed in almost all of the categories (see results below), including the newcomer category. Congratulations to all of the BAM dancers!

Wondering what a ballroom dance competition looks like? Tiffanie, Coordinator of Sport Clubs, was able to attend the event and shoot some video footage.

Interested in learning how to dance, either socially or competitively? BAM hosts practices numerous times a week and newcomers are always welcome! Check out their website for more information, or email the club at president@ballroomatmaryland.com.

On the Roster: MSOA

What is it really like to be a member of a sport club? What do club members do and why do they do it? This week's spotlight is on the Maryland Student Officials Association, the sport club dedicated to calling plays and keeping competitive games fair.

According to the MSOA website "The Maryland Student Officials Association is a University-sponsored sport club run entirely by students that provides sports officials to the University of Maryland campus community as well as other leagues in the Washington, DC – Baltimore area. The MSOA also runs several regional sports tournaments including an annual flag football and basketball tournament." In addition to officiating on-campus events and local area league games, MSOA participates in clinics and youth outreach programs. Last weekend the club had the opportunity to officiate the Baltimore Ravens Flag Regional Tournament, an event for Baltimore area youth football players dedicated to physical fitness and teaching the sport's values on and off the field.

I had the chance to catch up with a few of the MSOA members and ask them three quick questions:

What prompted you to join MSOA?

Dan Martinez: I joined MSOA because I truly loved to officiate. I began by officiating youth basketball in my hometown and after hearing of this opportunity through intramural sports, I knew I had to join. I became friends with the previous Vice President and he told me about an opportunity to make money and referee club basketball. After officiating my first tournament, I knew I made a good decision in joining MSOA.

Dave Stewart: I was prompted to join MSOA because of the officiating opportunities and the friendship that came with that. MSOA provides several opportunities for students to officiate a wide variety of sports.

Evan Ball: I thought it would be a good leadership and opportunity to further enhance my officiating skills.

How has being involved with MSOA shaped your college career?

Dan Martinez: Joining MSOA has given me events and opportunities to stay busy during the weekend. Essentially every week, there are events going on that I am able to participate in. Also, MSOA has allowed me to become friends with people that I probably would have never met. These people are some of my good friends today and I have to thank MSOA for that.

Dave Stewart: Being involved in MSOA has allowed me to make a lot of new friends. MSOA is a very close knit group. MSOA has also allowed me to gain a lot of leadership experience. It has also allowed me to better my communication skills and my conflict management skills.

Evan Ball: Being an officer in MSOA has given me more leadership and management skills that could help prepare me for future jobs.

What does MSOA do and how can students get involved?

Dan Martinez: MSOA is a club that officiates a variety of sports. We have the ability to travel to different sites to officiate sports such as flag football, basketball, soccer, dodgeball, etc. or we can stay on campus and assist other organizations. Along with officiating, we also participate in fundraising events so we can have end of the semester social events where our entire club can participate and we like to give back to the community by doing philanthropy events.

Dave Stewart: MSOA provides officials for outside contractors. We also do fundraising and philanthropy events. In order to get involved check out our website or the CRS website.

Evan Ball: MSOA officiates numerous tournaments throughout the area, ranging from homecoming, flag football tournaments, and basketball tournaments. Any student who is familiar with a sport is welcome to participate by officiating that sport.

Walk, Trot, Canter: Pro Staff Equestrian Lesson

On Tuesday night, Tiffanie and I had the chance to drive out to Oatland Stables in Gaithersburg, MD to visit the UMD Equestrian Club Team for a lesson. The drive from campus, even in rush hour, wasn't bad at all and we made it out to the farm in about 45 minutes. Once we got there, the other members were already tacked up and out in the ring so we quickly headed out to the barn to meet our horses.

It was dark by the time we started our lesson, but Oatland's outdoor ring has lights so we were good to go. Neither of us are experienced riders, so after mounting our horses we had the chance to just sit and watch the other club members and their horses do a few low jumps. It was amazing to see the club in action!

The club hosts 8 lessons a week at Oatland Stables with each member riding only once a week. Even with limited practice time, the competitive team is ranked 7th in our region & placed 4th out of 12 schools at their last competition at Christopher Newport University! The club is a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) and is currently preparing for their next competition on November 19, an IHSA show hosted by Towson University at Featherdown Farms.

After watching the team practice for a bit, we got to test out our horsemanship! We did a bit of walking around the ring and after a few minutes Star, the team coach, asked if we wanted to trot. There was a resounding "yes" from the team, so Tiffanie and I looked at each other, shrugged our shoulders and said "alright!". We were instructed on how to "grab mane", sit in 2 point, and get going!

Let me just say... woah. No wonder you all love this sport! I can honestly say I didn't want to get off Feathers at the end of the lesson. We did a bit more trotting, a bit more walking, and the lesson ended as the next group of riders walked up to the ring.

The girls warned us that our legs would hurt the next day... they were right, but I'm looking forward to getting out to another practice sometime in the spring! Thank you again to the Maryland Equestrian Team for allowing us to participate in your lesson!

Welcome, UMD Turtle Shell!

On October 22, 2011, the Maryland Women's Crew Club hosted an Alumni & Family Day event to welcome a new racing shell to their fleet.

The day kicked off with a delicious brunch while family & friends mingled, caught up on current club happenings, and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Once everyone had a chance to grab a bite to eat, the club officers began the dedication of the new boat, complete with a sparkling cider christening!

The UMD Turtle Shell is a welcome addition to our fleet, made possible by an anonymous donor.

Club members are thrilled to have the opportunity to race in this beautiful new boat!

After the presentation, parents were able to get a feel for the sport & alumni were able to get back on the water! The club hosted a Family & Friends Row and allowed interested family members the opportunity to grab an oar and test their hand at rowing.

Ballroom Dance and Black Belt: Demo-ed in the Stamp All Nighter

Baseball- Defeated Buffalo 9-2, Lafayette 8-2, MC Germantown 8-4 and George Washington in a double header 4-0 & 3-1.

Basketball (M) - Hosted George Washington and won 77-51

Basketball (W)- Remained undefeated at the Georgetown tournament winning over Johns Hopkins, Georgetown and Towson.

Cycling- Won 3 men's B races and 3 women's B races at the W&M mountain bike race

Equestrian- Leandra Bitterfield achieved 1st intermediate flat and fences gaining her Reserve high point rider honors

Field Hockey- defeated American 3-1 and Navy 5-1

Ice Hockey (M)- achieved victory over Duke 5-3, UNC 5-3 and NC state 5-1

Ice Hockey (W)- During the 2010-2011 season, 7 girls achieve Academic All-American, which was tied with another team as being the highest in the nation for our division in club hockey

Lacrosse (M)- had key victories over Loyola, Penn State and American

Lacrosse (W)- were victorious against JMU & Delaware

Rugby (M)- Defeated Tennessee (who was ranked in the top 20 in nation) by a large margin of 36-26.

Terp Runners- Penn State Race: Men's team placed 4th; at the Cavalier Invitational: men's team placed 2nd behind #1 nationally ranked UVA and women placed 4th.

Triathlon- Mike Hepp placed 1st in his age group and 12th overall at Chesapeake Ironman

Spotlight on: UMD Tennis Club

This year, the UMD Tennis Club enlisted 200 students on their roster, achieving record numbers. Throughout the season, they played regular season matches against Georgetown, UMBC, George Washington, and John Hopkins. UMD Tennis Club won all of their matches and, for the first time in club tennis history, these matches were open to all players on the team (not just the top ranked travel players). This allowed ample opportunity for those who are not typically involved in competitions to participate in matches, as well as get some quality experience.

After coming off a 16th place finish in the National Tournament last year (out of 64 teams invited), UMD’s competitive team is training harder than ever to pursue their goal of winning the National Tournament. To prepare for this tournament, the team played (and excelled) in the following tournaments this past semester:

Legg Mason Classic in DC - This tournament included four invited teams (including UMD) to participate in a tournament alongside the USTA Legg mason Tournament. They watched the pros play, spoke with them, and even played with them as a large crowd looked on. UMD won the tournament, and enjoyed a fantastic experience!
Battle of the Sections in NY - This tournament took place at the US Open Courts at Flushing Meadows, NY (in Queens) a week after the US open ended. It included 16 schools from around the East Coast. UMD Tennis Club came in 2^nd place to Penn State, but UMD won the Sportsmanship Award for the tournament (other schools voted for this award). UMD also had the opportunity to hit in Arthur Ashe Stadium, which is the biggest tennis stage in America.
USTA Virginia Fall Invitational in VA - This tournament included 24 schools from around the nation. UMD tied for 5^th place (with UVA), and had the closest match in program history against JMU-- It came down to the last point to determine the winner of the match, in which UMD scored the winning point!
2010 USTA Tennis on-Campus Fall Invitational in Arkansas – The UMD Tennis Club flew to Little Rock, Arkansas to participate in the first TOC Fall Invitational run by the USTA, with over 20 participating teams. UMD earned 2^nd place, losing a close game against Alabama with a score of 22-20. This tournament showed the players a great time, especially due to the player party held for the teams after the tournament!

The UMD Tennis Club is now preparing for the more important tournaments of next semester, including both the Sectional and National Tournaments!

Spotlight on: UMD Squash Club

The UMD Squash Club has already had a very exciting season; A victory in the NCSRA tournament against competitive teams in the DC, Maryland and Virginia areas allowed them to win the Division 4 summer league title! This title was extremely important and difficult to win, especially when facing the challenges of teammate injuries, as well as absences. This will also give the team their 5th league title within the past three years!

A strong victory over Johns Hopkins during the past weekend has helped the team to look forward to their upcoming entrance into the Division 3 league during the winter semester, therefore providing heavier competition.

The UMD Squash Club will be hosting the 5th annual Lucky Boast Squash Tournament on November 12th-14th. Last year's tournament was a great success with almost 40 players participating. The tournament features all levels of experience, including beginner, intermediate and advanced draws, so players of all skill levels can have fun and be competitive. Two matches are guaranteed, and there will be prizes for participants from our sponsors. Players of all levels are encouraged to participate in this event, as it will be a fun and valuable experience! Contact Rahul Nair for more details if interested, and see below for more information.

The weekend of October 2-3 was a successful one for the Maryland Equestrian Club! The team attended a show hosted by Mount St. Mary's at Goucher College. Erica Carson made her debut as the club's new coach and helped coach the team to place 3rd overall out of 15 schools. The club is very proud of their huge accomplishment - as is CRS!

How To: Member Rosters

We're 3 weeks into the season and at this point you should have turned in at least one batch of waivers. Still having a problem getting your members listed online so that CRS can match up your waivers to your members?

Here are a few ideas we talked about at the Officers Summit on Sept. 12:

Bring a laptop to practice and have people sign up as they come
Have a team meeting at a computer lab
Collect the information from your team members and have the officers enter it

Remember, each club needs to have at least 3 CPR certified members listed online, waivers should be turned in every week for new members, and every that attends practice needs to input their information online.

The easiest way to ensure that everyone at practice is registered/waivered online is to print out your member roster prior to practice and check people off as they come. You'll be able to hand out waivers to the folks that need it and will be able to tell them to get online ASAP.

Did you turn in waivers but see those folks still listed in grey at the bottom of your roster? It's possible either CRS hasn't updated the waivers online yet, OR those members didn't get online until after we went through the waivers. The easiest way to check the last time CRS updated your roster is to look at the time stamp, which is listed at the very bottom of your member roster:

How to: Order Equipment

If your club orders equipment through the CRS office, here is an easy way to make sure your order gets placed quickly - provide all nessesary information! Not sure what information we do or don't need? Here's a quick run down, plus an easy way to get it to us!

If your order is more than $500, you can use a basic spreadsheet to get me the information I need. It should look something like this:

In this scenerio, we'd go with Vendor B because they have the lowest total price. We do this so that the State of Maryland can ensure that we're getting the best prices when using state money (CRS or SGA) to purchase equipment.

You can send the spreadsheet as an attachment, or you can drop it off in person. Either way, all of the information needs to be clear so we can place your order in a timely manner. Remember, it takes 2-3 days to process your order prior to placing the order with the company!

Meet the officers at the Annual Taste of CRS event on September 12, from 1-4pm! Officers from each of the 42 clubs will be stationed on LaPlata Beach and you'll have a chance to ask any questions you might have.

Catch a game with the Washington Freedom – DC’s premier women’s professional soccer team. Their next (and possibly last) home game of the season is on September 11th at 7pm at the Maryland Soccerplex in Germantown, MD.

There is a special ticket offer this game for college students around the DC area - a $20 Lower Bleacher ticket with FREE transport to and from the stadium. If you are interested in getting your club together to attend the game, email Nich Reddy (nisch.reddy@washingtonfreedom.com) by Wednesday, September 8th with the number of tickets you would like and she will make the necessary transport arrangements.

Joining a sport club is a great way to meet new people, learn a new sport, or continue playing a sport you love. If you were a member of a sport club last year, you know the drill - complete your info online and then either print a waiver or wait until your first club practice to get one from an officer.

If you are a new to the club program, the easiest thing to do is contact the appropriate club officer to find out when your first practice is!

Getting on the club roster is super easy. Just find your club and then click the link:

That link will bring you to the club's member roster page. To add yourself as a member, click "member add":

And then complete all of the information. Be sure to use your full name and correct UID:

Your information will not show up on the CRS website until a waiver has been turned in to the sport club office, so you can either print a waiver and bring it to your first club practice, or just wait until your first practice and get a waiver from a club officer. If you'd like to print a waiver, click the "print a waiver" link:

Either way, be sure to turn in your completed waiver to a club officer. The club officers will bring all completed waivers to the sport club office, and your name should appear on the club roster within a few days.

Once your name has been added to the roster, it will look like this:

If you do not see your name on the roster within a few days of turning in your waiver, please check with the club officers to ensure that your waiver has been turned in to the sport club office. It is the responsibility of both you and your club officers to ensure that no one is practicing without a waiver on file!

Practices start on September 7. Get your information online now so you are ahead of the game!

Fun Team Building Opportunity!

Interested in doing some fun team building with your club, while at the same time participating in a great community service effort? Why not help out at the CRS Sprint Triathlon?

Volunteers are needed to help out with registration, handing out water to participants, and monitoring the course. the event date is Sunday, September 26, and all volunteers will receive t-shirts and snacks.

All sport club participants are encouraged to volunteer! Gather up a group of your teammates and make a day of volunteering and cheering on the triathlon participants. Email Kristin Legg, Triathlon Co-Coordinator, at klegg@umd.edu for more details or to sign up for a volunteer shift.

Spotlight on Men's Ultimate

The Men's Ultimate team has been a program on the rise over the last five years. From being a relatively unknown entity in the Ultimate Frisbee community to becoming one of the regions top teams; Maryland Ultimate is now a nationally recognized program. After finishing third in the Metro East region for two straight years, the team is looking for it's first berth in the National Championship tournament this year. Two major steps towards that goal were made this fall during the Wolfpack Invitational and Wilmington 8s tournaments. The Wolfpack Invitational is an annual fall tournament that hosts some of the east coasts most competitive teams. This is the first year that Maryland was invited and able to compete. Seeded 7th coming in; the team was able to finish the tournament in 5th place, due to victories over UNC, East Carolina, Georgia Southern and Emory. Ket wins at tournaments like this are major stepping stones towards the teams Nationals goal.

On November 7 and 8th, The men's ultimate team competed at one of the most highly competitive tournaments in that nation. Eight nationally competitive teams were invited to compete in Wilmington, NC. National powerhouses such as Pittsburgh, Florida and Virginia were in attendance. Tournaments such as this were out of reach for the Men's Ultimate team several years ago.
Finally, the team hosted one of the fall's largest ultimate frisbee events on November 14th and 15th. The Colonial Ultimate Festival hosts over 40 teams from schools as far as Boston College to compete on the fields of the Capital Polo Club in Poolesville, MD. This tournament is one of the largest in the country and is in it's second year of being hosted by the team just before Thanksgiving time, with a number of sponsors providing tournament merchandise, pictures of the action and food for hungry players and spectators. This year the tournament was once again a huge success. Congratulations to Millersville University on winning overall tournament champions.

Sportlight on Women's Ice Hockey

The Maryland Women’s Ice Hockey team is off to an exciting season. The team is showing a great deal of talent and enthusiasm that has provided for some amazing ice hockey. Come check out the Terps as they battle it out on the ice. The team’s home ice is located only a few miles from campus at The Garden’s Ice House in Laurel, MD.

The Terps have started strong this season with victories against Mt Holyoke, Naval Academy and most recently Virginia. The team took on Virginia this past weekend at the Verizon Center in DC. The match up took place prior to a Washington Capitals game. The Terps defeated UVA, the defending League Champions, with a 2-1 victory. Goals were scored by junior, Assistant Captain, Carolyn Desrochers and freshman, Emily Summers.

The Terps have been working hard since last semester to build the team to its full potential. The team began with an intensive summer training program. As the season officially began the team has developed a new playing strategy that has allowed the talent on this team to shine through. The team also spent a September afternoon teambuilding at the Washington National Zoo. The hard work that has been put in by every member of the team and coaching staff is clearly evident this season. The theme of the season has been “Fight Back”. The Terps chose the motto to represent this season as a time of rebuilding the team.

Women's Softball plays at Towson for NCSA conference games at 10 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm on Saturday Oct 31st. They will be playing at Fort Garrison Elementary School 3310 Woodvalley Drive.

Women's Softball is hosting their first tournament on Nov. 7th against St. Mary's, University of Delaware, and The College of New Jersey. Games will occur from 8:00 am until 6:15 pm. Don't miss them!

Tip of the Week: Hotel Reservations

Does your club stay in hotels when traveling? Here are a few tips and ideas to make the process as painless as possible!

Call the hotel directly. Do not use an online booking site (orbitz, hotwire, etc) or a service such as 1-800-Hotels! If you book online or via a mass booking phone number, your credit card will be charged immediately and it will be impossible to switch the payment to the CRS credit card. When you call the hotel, you will need to put down your presonal credit card, and I will call the Wednesday prior to travel to switch out the credit card to mine.
Call the hotel as far in advance as possible. You will have a better selection of available rooms (double beds, non-smoking, etc) the earlier you book.
Use a credit card, and not a debit card, when you call the hotel. They will need to keep a credit card on file for incidentals (the CRS card cannot be used for this) and the hotel may place a hold on some funds. If you use a debit card for this purpose, they will place a hold on money in your account and you will not have access to that money for 3-5 days post travel!
Be sure to note in your travel report the name the room is held under so that when I call to transfer the cards, I am able to assist the hotel representative in finding your reservation.
If the hotel is paid for by the CRS credit card, you must bring back receipts for each room. A $50 fine will be charged if receipts do not come back in the red binder.

Tip of the Week: Membership Rosters

Having a hard time getting your club members to sign up on the CRS website? Make it easy for your new members - bring a laptop to practices so they can enter their information before or during practice! That way you know they've signed up, and they can ask you any questions they have. Most practice facilities have wireless internet access, so it should be easy to get this done. Of course, you'll need to ensure that someone keeps an eye on the computer... you wouldn't want it to "walk away".Remember, everyone who attends practices needs to be signed up on the CRS website and needs to have a waiver signed and turned in to the Sport Club office. You may want to assign this duty to one of your club officers so that one person is responsible for keeping track of your club's membership roster.

Every May, more than 100 club officers gather to celebrate the end of another great year. May 2010 is a long way off, but it's never too early to start thinking about who you are going to nominate for each of the 7 awards given out annually.

The award categories are:

Student-Athlete Achievement - awarded to the club with the highest average GPA

Spirit of Sport Clubs - awarded to the sport club member with the highest level of dedication and passion for their club
Fundraising - awarded to the club whose fundraising success has allowed for club growth

Sport Club of the Year - awarded to the club that has demonstrated the highest degree of organization and commitment to its members, the department, and the University

Coach/Instructor of the Year - awarded to the sport club program's most outstanding instructor

Athletic/Competitive Achievement - awarded to the club with the most outstanding athletic or competitive achievement.

Terrapin Community Award - presented to the club that demonstrates the highest level of "giving back" to the University or College Park community.

What is Terp GOALS? It's a leadership development series geared specifically towards our sport club members and officers. This program is designed to help YOU develop relationships, transition in new officers, learn how to manage your club finances, and delegate responsibilities to fellow officers.

The first session of Terp GOALS will be held on October 6, 2009 at 7pm in the SPH Building, room 0307. This session is entitled Goal Setting & Understanding Leadership Development and will focus on:

Officer Orientation - Now that you have had a month as an officer, what questions do you have?

Leadership Styles - Are you task-oriented? Autocratic or democratic? Identify your leadership style and learn how to make it work for you and your club.

Goal Setting - You can't get from Point A to Point B if you don't know where Point B is! Learn how to identify goals and how to get your club to all work towards the same thing.

Leadership Team - Learn how to help your club officers work together.

Resources and Support Structure - Identify ways CRS staff can help you reach your club goals and the resources available to you as club officers.

This session will last about an hour and a half. Snacks will be provided!

Eppley After Dark - October 2, 2009

Light the Night - Gymnastics

On Saturday, October 11, the Maryland Club Gymnastics Team put on their walking shoes and lit up their balloons to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Light the Night walk is a walk done in honor of those suffering and surviving blood cancer. With the help of family and friends, the Club Gymnastics team raised over $500 dollars to support this wonderful cause. Each participant is given a balloon at the walk that lights up. All the balloons are lit up at once and it is an amazing sight to see all the balloons of those who have come out in support. It was an amazing experience for the whole team and we hope to continue our fund-raising efforts. It's that time of the year again! The 2008-2009 sport club year will kick off the week of September 2, and there are tons of fun things in store for all club officers. See the bottom of this post for the week's line up.

For those looking to join a club, practices start on Monday, September 8. To join a club, just click on the name of the club you are interested in on the Sport Club Homepage. There should be a contact person listed there, and that person would be more than happy to let you know the date and time of the first practice. Be sure to click "Add Member" at the bottom of the page of the club you are interested in and fill in all of your contact information. You can also click "Print a Waiver". Fill it out, bring it to practice, and within days you should see your name on the member roster!
